How to select curtain rods for a valance
OK you search and search for the perfect valance….now what kind of rod do you buy? Or how wide should the valance be.
Curtain rod type will be dictated by the valance style and rod pocket size
Using the correct curtain rod and fullness is important to the final look of your window valances. The curtain rod type will be dictated by the valance style and rod pocket size. If you use a one inch dia. rod in a two inch rod pocket the it will look very saggie at the top. Check to see what size rod pocket your valance has. The rod pocket will be a little bigger the curtain. For example a 3 inch rod pocket will take a 2 1/2 inch flat rod.
When to use a decorative rod
On window valances that don’t have a rod pocket like a scarf valance for example, you would use a decorative rod. It could be wood or metal and usually has finials. I like a thicker diameter curtain rod

How to determine the fullness
To determine valance fullness just figure the width of your window and triple it. So a 36 inch wide window would take a 108 inch wide valance. A little less or more won’t hurt. You might have to buy several and put them on the same rod for the fullness and appear as one valance.
Don’t make the same mistake as I did
Couple of years ago we switch out our vertical blind on our patio door for a different treatment but wanted a valance. So I shopped around with my wife until we found the perfect color at a local big box store. Our width required 5 valances for proper fullness. So we bought the valances and correct rod and went home to install them. That’s when we found out that the length of each valance was a little different. So the bottom edge instead of looking even was choppy. Moral of the story buy from a window treatment retailer with good quality products…..more info
