1.Check the alignment of the strike plate and the sliding door's latch. Adjust the position of the strike plate on the door jamb if the latch is not lined up with the hole in the plate.
2.Test the movement of the door latch by locking and unlocking the door several times while it is open. If the latch appears to be sticking, spray WD-40 or another household lubricant into the mechanism.
3.Replace the door lock if the previous steps did not correct the problem. Open the sliding door so you can access the strike plate on the door jamb. Remove the screws and the strike plate. Unscrew the mounting screws and take off the old door lock. Install the replacement door lock and tighten the mounting screws. Hold the strike plate against the door jamb and pull the sliding door closed. Line up the strike plate with the door latch and mark its position with a pencil. Drill screw holes and mount the strike plate according to your markings.
